SKIN CANCER—BEWARE!

Dermatologist examines a mole of male patient

This is the 900 pound gorilla that we all want to avoid! Let’s review some very simple steps to follow every day to seek healthy skin. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the body. About one in three people will have a run in with it during their lifetime. 96% of all skin cancers can be detected early and cured relatively easily. These are called CARCINOMA and will be reviewed in this blog.

Basal Cell and Squamous Cell Carcinomas occur almost exclusively on sun exposed skin, usually in fair skin people. Chronic cumulative sun damage adds up since childhood and begins manifesting usually by retirement age, but possibly much earlier (one of my daughters got a skin cancer in her 20’s due to surreptitious tanning bed abuse). Therefore, we must be cautious and on the lookout at all ages. Early detection is essential for successful simple removal of carcinomas.

What do we look for? Changes in existing bumps and spots, as well as new ones forming are important to spot. Especially be mindful if these changes are persistent past two months, and they are progressive. Color changes as well as color mixtures are important. Size matters—anything larger than pencil head eraser diameter (6mm) is suspicious. Asymmetry and border irregularity can point to trouble.

SIMPLE STEPS TO FOLLOW FOR SKIN CANCER PREVENTION AND PROTECTION
1. Choose dark skinned/non Irish heritage parents!
2. Choose to live in a Northern latitude.
3. Choose to do sun avoidance: April 15 — October 15 plan indoor activities from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. These are the peak times for burning and sun damage.
4. Use copious sun protection, especially when you have to be outdoors during peak times.
5. After the age of 50yo get a yearly FULL BODY SKIN EXAM from a dermatologist. (BEWARE: some dermatologists are more comprehensive than others.)
6. Optimize your Vitamin D3 daily intake. We are all deficient and need to supplement daily. Oral dose of 2000 iu will keep most adults in a cancer preventative state.

REMEMBER THAT EARLY DETECTION AND EARLY REMOVAL OF SKIN CANCERS, HOPEFULLY IN THEIR PRECANCEROUS STAGE, IS THE BEST PRACTICE—IT’S LIKE PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE

The Most Remarkable Medical Discovery

If you read my blog from early January, you could tell how enthusiastic I am about the newly discovered health benefits readily available from simply optimizing Vitamin D3. Truly I believe it’s NOT JUST ANOTHER HEALTH FAD! I believe this is the most remarkable medical discovery in my 40 years in the medical field.

In this blog I will explore unanswered questions about D. Later this month I will respond on the subject of possible side effects: Is there a dark side to Vitamin D? (Short answer—rarely. See disclaimer below.) But first, if you haven’t already read my first blog on Vitamin D, do so now so we can build on that foundation.

WHAT KIND OF CANCERS ARE PREVENTED BY OPTIMIZING VITAMIN D?

All kinds. Lowering cancer risk is a better way to say it, but this is the #1 reason that we should know about D. This vitamin actually works like a hormone when blood levels are optimum—fine tuning all the body’s functions, much like, for example, thyroid hormone does. So when your body is “tuned” with D, everything works better — less chronic fatigue, less chronic pain, less depression, etc. Most importantly the immune system is clearly better able to prevent infections and cancers. Not just skin cancer, ALL TYPES OF CANCER. This is vital for all of us, but even more for those with a personal and/or family history of cancer. These HIGH RISK individuals desparately need to optimize their D3.

WHAT KIND OF VITAMIND IS BEST AND HOW MUCH?

D3 is significantly more active and much more stable than D2. D2 is cheaper and often used in multivitamins, but it is clearly inferior. I recommend D3 and will discuss it exclusively from here on. How much D3 is enough? Adults over 90-100 lbs should start at 2,000 units daily. Those over 200 lbs start with 4,000 units. Elderly and dark skinned people may need more—especially if indoors most of the time. After taking this daily for three months, see your health provider and get a blood D level. (Be CONSISTENT. If you miss a day, double the dose the next day and make it up.)

WHAT BLOOD LEVEL IS OPTIMUM?

Common sense tells us to shoot for the peak biological level. This is the highest level you can get from the sun. This turns out to be 70 blood units. Therefore the usual recommendation is to get close to this—50-100 blood units is the goal. (My blood D level was 42 on 2,000 units of D3 daily. So I doubled it to 4,000 daily, and my blood level after 3 months was 80—perfect. Everyone is a little different. Work with your primary medical provider until your level is OPTIMUM.

ARE THERE OTHER NUTRIENTS THAT WORK WITH D3?

YES! If you are interested is optimizing bone growth and metabolism to prevent osteoporosis, magnesium and Vitamin K2 are critical to have in place. These enhance the deposition of calcium into the bone and not into the blood vessels where it could cause vascular disease. In fact high doses of calcium that are commonly recommended for osteoporosis can be dangerous without these balancing nutrients. D3K2 supplements are readily available now, especially in health food stores.

If you are pediatric age, have kidney problems, are pregnant or nursing, or have glandular problems (endocrine), consult with your doctor prior to optimizing your Vitamin D3 intake. Be aware that most, but not all, practicing doctors follow practices similar to the above. If your doctor does not recommend Vitamin D3, get a second or even a third opinion.

New Year’s Most Important Health Resolution

TAKE VITAMIN D3 DAILY!

At the beginning of this New Year it became obvious THE MOST IMPORTANT HEALTH ISSUE that I could discuss for 2016 is optimizing vitamin D3. Yes, D3 if FAR MORE IMPORTANT than getting a few extra pounds off, or lowering your cholesterol or even exercising more! Making this change will be FAR

BETTER, FAR EASIER AND FAR LESS EXPENSIVE than other resolutions!

What is Vitamin D3 and Why is it So Important?

Vitamin D3 is the most active form of D. This vitamin has been known for a long time to aid in the absorption and utilization of calcium, vital to bone mineralization, providing strength and integrity to the skeleton — the structural framework of the body.

What is New and Revolutionary about D3?

Literally this is the best discovery in the field of medicine during my 40 years in the medical field. About 60 years ago scientists began to study why some people got more cancer than others. They became focused on something that was obvious– that the sun’s rays actually caused skin cancers of various types—including often lethal melanomas. So our culture did a 180 degree turn and became photophobic in regard to the sun’s rays. (Tanning had been the “healthy” thing to do before that. Vitamin D was known as the Sunshine Vitamin!) What transpired during the next two generations was an emphasis on sun avoidance or sun protection.

This resulted in nearly our entire population becoming deficient (or at least borderline low) in D3. This is a fact today, unless one is actively taking D3 regularly or spending significant amounts of time outside with most of the clothes off. This on top of the fact that “normal” blood levels of D3 are clearly sub-optimal for the most important benefits—cancer prevention, depression prevention, chronic pain prevention, etc, etc.

Where does this leave us now? More, much more internal cancers than ever before. So scientists started studying why—What is causing this large increase of all types of cancers? Could a LACK of Vitamin D3 be associated with this CANCER EPIDEMIC? YES!! That is what 100’s of scientific studies over the past 20 years are pointing to. From population studies showing Northerners get more internal cancers than Southerners, to occupational studies that show office workers get more internal cancers than outdoor workers. NOW IT’S BECOMING OBVIOUS THAT THE SUN’S RAYS ACTUALLY HAVE MORE BENEFITS THAN LIABILITIES!

What is the Bottom Line/Action Point Regarding Vitamin D3? We should take OPTIMUM D3 DAILY. You can’t get that much from a multivitamin or from milk. Most of us can’t or shouldn’t get that much from the sun—due to burning or skin cancer risk. So, if we get D3 from a daily supplement, this is the safest and simplest way to go.

How Much Should We Take Daily?

I like to start adults (over 90 lbs) on 2,000 units of D3 daily. For people over age 60 and those over 200 lbs, I recommend 4,000 units D3 daily. Oh course everyone taking D3 should get a blood test to check their level after taking it for a few months. This can usually be done at your annual checkup. The optimum/cancer preventative blood level is 50-100 ng/mL. The daily dose should be adjusted until this target blood level is achieved.

Has The Sun Been Fully Vindicated?

It often seems that generations cast a particular object or even a person as either a villain or a hero. The sun’s rays have certainly played both of these roles over the years. I recommend that you get some healthy rays, but “Don’t get burned!” Use Common Sense. Plan outdoor activities for morning and late afternoon or evening. Use broad brimmed hats and other garments to cover up when you have to be out during the peak sun times. Finally, apply high SPF sunscreens to exposed skin areas (30 or higher) and reapply every 2 hours.

My Five Year Experience with Optimum Doses of Vitamin D3

I am convinced clinically that my patients who take sufficient Vitamin D3 consistently over the years are getting fewer and fewer cancers and precancers over time. Many of these patients were escalating their number of new cancers each year, and now are decreasing their numbers dramatically. However, I believe ALL CAN BENEFIT, not just high risk patients. Vitamin D3 is sold in every store in America. If you have $5 in your pocket, stop at any store and GET STARTED!

Who Benefits the Most?

Those who are High Risk for any type of cancer(s). Families that get cancers often, transplant patients, immunosuppressed patients on certain drugs that lower immunity, HIV patients, and anyone who has had a cancer or precancer previously.

Other Products That Can Help

EPIONCE makes two great sunscreens that can help prevent sun burning and prevent photo aging from chronic damaging effects of the sun’s rays. Daily Shield 50 is great for people who need a light moisturizer combined with a powerful sun protection factor. (Remember to reapply if outside very long—especially after lunch.) Daily Shield 30 is for those who need to moisturize more, and not as much heavy sun protection. (For instance, during the cold weather season.)

In Summary

Science has proven over time that the sun’s rays can be both a blessing and a curse. Therefore, moderating your exposure is the best policy. Some sunlight is clearly good! Too much is toxic in the short term and can cause cancer and advanced/premature aging in the long term. HOWEVER, TOO LITTLE VITAMIN D3 CAN INCREASE YOUR CANCER RISK FOR ALL ORGANS—breast, colon, lung, prostate, skin, etc, etc.
